These prayers are adapted from a version used by St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Evanston, IL in 2006 The leader of the Intercessions stands in the middle of the congregation. The people respond to the prayers as indicated.

Rejoicing in the mighty acts of God who has delivered his people from sin and death through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Let us lift our voices and pray,

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer.

Let us give thanks to God for the multitude of blessings he showers upon us:

For our lives and for those whom we love, For the beauty of this home God has created for us, For our families and our friendships, Let us give thanks to the God of Life.

Special intentions are offered silently or aloud.

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer.

Let us pray for the Church, that it may carry forward the redemptive works of God:

For our clergy and our bishops, For the many lay people who serve the church, And serve the world through the church. For those gather here in worship and prayer.

Special intentions are offered silently or aloud.

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer.

Let us pray for the newly baptized, that the joy of Easter may ever grow within them, and that the Spirit may guide them in lives of active faith.

Let us pray for the nations and peoples of the world, that the powers that oppress and destroy may decline, And that justice, peace, and prosperity be lifted up.

Stephen Fearing

Stephen was born in 1988 in Cookeville, TN, where his parents met whilst attending Tennessee Tech. Shortly after, they moved to Dalton, Georgia where they put down roots and joined First Presbyterian Church, the faith family that taught Stephen that he was first and foremost a beloved child of God. It was this community that taught Stephen that it was OK to have questions and doubts and that nothing he could do could every possibly separate him from the love of God. In 1995, his sister, Sarah Kate, joined the family and Stephen began his journey as a life-long musician. Since then, he has found a love of music and has found this gift particularly fitting for his call to ministry. Among the instruments that he enjoys are piano, trumpet, guitar, and handbells. Stephen has always had a love of singing and congregation song. An avid member of the marching band, Stephen was the drum major of his high school's marching band. In 2006, Stephen began his tenure at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC where he majored in Religion and minored in History. While attending PC, Stephen continued to explore his love of music by participating in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Jazz Trio, as well as playing in the PC Handbell ensemble and playing mandolin and banjo PC's very own bluegrass/rock group, Hosegrass, of which Stephen was a founding member (Hosegrass even released their own CD!). In 2010, Stephen moved from Clinton to Atlanta to attend Columbia Theological Seminary to pursue God's call on his life to be a pastor in the PC(USA). During this time, Stephen worked at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Silver Creek Presbyterian Church, Central Presbyterian Church, and Westminster Presbyterian Church. For three years, Stephen served as the Choir Director of Columbia Theological Seminary's choir and also served as the Interim Music Director at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In 2014, Stephen graduated from Columbia with a Masters of Divinity and a Masters of Arts in Practical Theology with an emphasis in liturgy, music, and worship. In July of 2014, Stephen was installed an ordained as Teaching Elder at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church in Shelter Island, NY. Later that year, Stephen married the love of his life, Tricia, and they share their home on Shelter Island with their Golden Doodle, Elsie, and their calico cat, Audrey. In addition to his work with the people who are Shelter Island Presbyterian Church, Stephen currently serves as a commission from Long Island Presbytery to the Synod of the Northeast and, beginning in January of 2016, will moderate the Synod's missions team.

The following Prayers of the People is by Carol Penner via re:Worship. God of the bright and morning star, God of the rising sun, God of darkness banished, we praise and worship you! For empty tombs: thank you! For disciples running with good news: thank you! For your presence, alive, powerful, resurrected: thank you! We celebrate your victory over death, over all the powers that would defeat us.

Help us to grasp resurrection; to understand its power, to see its force at work in our world, overturning evil empires, changing the hatred within us, moving the world slowly, forcefully, bending us towards love and truth.

On this day of great gladness empower us to be your ambassadors, proclaiming good news. Good news in our kitchens and living rooms, good news in the offices and workshops good news in the fields and factories Help us to be that good news, walking softly on this good earth caring gently for all people, living hopefully into your kingdom.

Today we think of all who are grieving, especially… [name those who are grieving] and for the sick and dying…. [name those who are ill] for places in the world that are torn by war and bloodshed… [name countries at war]

In this world of broken hopes and dreams we catch sight of your kingdom come, in the person of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns in us forever. Amen.

For the church throughout the world, that all Christians may embody the reconciling love of Christ, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For the nations of the world and its leaders, that all may dwell in peace and that justice may be tempered by mercy, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For the planet Earth, God's gift to humankind, that all may share wisely its resources and conserve its riches for our children's children, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For our enemies, that we may regard them with the reconciling love made manifest in Christ, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For those who are sick or in trouble, for the defenseless, the weak, and the poor, that they may be restored to wholeness of life and livelihood, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

Let us pray to our God sayingLord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Holy God, you knew us before we took our first breath. You uttered your living Word and brought forth light, love, and life. You gathered us from the dust of the earth and called us your people. You sent us into the world to proclaim your mighty and wondrous deeds. You are with us even now as we continue our call. Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Mighty God, you have done great things; who is like you? You alone are our rock of refuge. You alone are our strong fortress. You alone are our hope and in you alone is our trust. Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Merciful God, your love never ends. We confess to you that we do not always share your love as we should. Where you have called us to live as one body, we exist as divided members. Where you have called us to give our Spirit-given gifts, we ignore your call. Where you have called us to forgive, we have forgotten your mercy. Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Gracious God, do not be far from us! Strengthen us that we might be givers of your grace and may your steadfast love be known to all of your children. Let us pray to God saying:gracious and merciful God, may your goodness shine upon us.

Holy God, you are our light and our salvation, the stronghold of our lives. Our confidence is in you who created us and creates us anew even this day. On this journey to the cross, show us the guidance and grace that you so abundantly have given to those who have gone before us. Gracious and merciful God, may your goodness shine upon us.

God of the cross, we are no strangers to trials and tribulations. When we are tempted to give in to fear and to give in to the evil that assails us, strengthen our hearts and steady our gaze upon your Son who goes with us in this wilderness. May we not forget the brilliance of his transfigured face and the power of his healing touch as we traverse this Lenten journey. Gracious and merciful God, may your goodness shine upon us.

God of all goodness and grace, your light shines in the darkness and illumines the path ahead. Do not hide your face from us but turn to us, your servants, as we are gathered and sent in the name of your Son. Send your Spirit into this place that we might do the work of his church and carry the good news of the gospel to every corner of the earth. Gracious and merciful God, may your goodness shine upon us.

God of life, we pray this day for your children in places that cry out for your goodness and your grace. Let us pray to our God sayingHoly God, lead us on the journey forward.

Creating God, you called your servants Adam and Eve on a journey to live. You called your servants Abraham and Sarah on a journey to trust. You called your servants Ruth and Naomi on a journey to love. You called your servants David and Solomon on a journey to lead. You called your servants Ezra and Nehemiah on a journey to rebuild. For as long as you have spoken you have called us to a journey. Holy God, lead us on the journey forward.

Your Son called his disciples to follow him on a journey to the cross; a road to save, a road to heal, a road to love. He called his disciples to a mountain where you sealed him with your light; a light to sustain him for the long road ahead. You call us to walk with him on that same road. Holy God, lead us on the journey forward.

Your Holy Spirit called the church to proclaim your word of life. Women and men, young and old, all were called and all were commissioned. We who are [name of worshiping community] are part of that same journey. The journey of Moses, the journey of Elijah, the journey of Christ, each was a response to your call and we pray for the courage to do the same. Holy God, lead us on the journey forward.

Gracious God, we thank you for this mountain. We thank you for this light. We, your people, stand in awe of your brilliance and your magnificence. Shortly after, they moved to Dalton, Georgia where they put down roots and joined First Presbyterian Church, the faith family that taught Stephen that he was first and foremost a beloved child of God. It was this community that taught Stephen that it was OK to have questions and doubts and that nothing he could do could every possibly separate him from the love of God. In 1995, his sister, Sarah Kate, joined the family and Stephen began his journey as a life-long musician. Since then, he has found a love of music and has found this gift particularly fitting for his call to ministry. Among the instruments that he enjoys are piano, trumpet, guitar, and handbells. Stephen has always had a love of singing and congregation song. An avid member of the marching band, Stephen was the drum major of his high school's marching band. In 2006, Stephen began his tenure at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC where he majored in Religion and minored in History. While attending PC, Stephen continued to explore his love of music by participating in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Jazz Trio, as well as playing in the PC Handbell ensemble and playing mandolin and banjo PC's very own bluegrass/rock group, Hosegrass, of which Stephen was a founding member (Hosegrass even released their own CD!). In 2010, Stephen moved from Clinton to Atlanta to attend Columbia Theological Seminary to pursue God's call on his life to be a pastor in the PC(USA). During this time, Stephen worked at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Silver Creek Presbyterian Church, Central Presbyterian Church, and Westminster Presbyterian Church. For three years, Stephen served as the Choir Director of Columbia Theological Seminary's choir and also served as the Interim Music Director at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In 2014, Stephen graduated from Columbia with a Masters of Divinity and a Masters of Arts in Practical Theology with an emphasis in liturgy, music, and worship. In July of 2014, Stephen was installed an ordained as Teaching Elder at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church in Shelter Island, NY. Later that year, Stephen married the love of his life, Tricia, and they share their home on Shelter Island with their Golden Doodle, Elsie, and their calico cat, Audrey. In addition to his work with the people who are Shelter Island Presbyterian Church, Stephen currently serves as a commission from Long Island Presbytery to the Synod of the Northeast and, beginning in January of 2016, will moderate the Synod's missions team.
